- Professor Phineas T. Horton creates the world's first synthezoid with photoelectric solar cells called Horton Cells which cover every square inch of his body and serve as his power source. The cells are too volatile and cause the epidermis of the synthezoid to burst into flame upon contact with air, but without harming the synthezoid itself. Considering his creation a failure because of that, Horton buries the synthezoid in his supposedly airtight tube within cement until such time as he could find a way either to prevent the synthezoid from bursting into flame or learn how to control it.
December[]
1st[]
- There is a slow leak in the synthezoid's tube, however, and eventually enough oxygen enters so that its flame ignites explosively, permitting it to escape. Wreaking havoc in innocent exploration of its environment, the synthezoid, inaccurately dubbed by the media as the Human Torch, soon realizes the panic it was causing and, unable to control his flaming power, douses its flame in a swimming pool.
- Said pool is owned by a criminal named Anthony Sardo, who tricks the Human Torch into committing crimes. Realizing what he was doing was wrong, the Torch confronts Sardo and during the fight is doused in nitrogen, which is revealed to be the catalyst that allows him to control his flame from that point on.
- Attempting to bring Sardo to justice, the criminal is killed in battle. When Professor Horton finds the Human Torch, he suggests that the two use his powers to obtain fame and fortune, but the Torch rejects this idea, leaving and never seeing his creator again.
