Abigail Harkness is a witch from Salem, Massachusetts and the older sister of Agatha Harkness. As a both a violet and a sapphire witch, Harkness was a very talented witch, she was accused of helping her sister practicing Dark Magic by her own coven during the Salem witch trials and was killed by them. She was ressurected by Rio Vidal at Agatha's request.

Years later, when her nephew Nicholas Scratch died, Harkness was determined to find a way to bring him back to life. She proposed that she and her sister walk the Witches' Road. They gathered a coven and did so, but only she, Agatha, and Morgan le Fay, who was undercover, made it to the end. Morgan wanted to stop them from fulfilling their wishes and becoming the most powerful witch in the world, so Agatha used her wish to acquire the Darkhold to defeat le Fay and bring Nicholas back.

After returning to Earth, Harkness became determined to create a safe community for mages, away from the chaos, hatred, and persecution of humans. Harkness founded the New Salem coven, and managed to convince almost every coven on the continent to join her, settling in a region of Colorado.

In early 2027, Harkness was one of the witches approached by Billy Kaplan in his search for his mother, and she promised to help him if he helped her fight an army of demons threatening New Salem. Once he did, Harkness performed a powerful tracking spell to find the Scarlet Witch, locating her hiding in Sokovia.

Months later, the Scarlet Witch, accompanied by Alice Wu-Gulliver and the spirit of Agatha, came to New Salem investigating the instability that magic is suffering, asking for Harkness' help. She states that she has also felt the instability of magic, that spells are becoming less efficient and witches are gradually losing their powers. Harkness suggests that Wanda, as the Scarlet Witch, would be able to solve this problem, but that to do so, she would need to know more about her origins, her family, so Harkness transports everyone to Sokovia, except for Alice who had moved to New Salem.

Personality[]

Much like her sister Agatha, Abigail is also known for her confident attitude, as well as her dry and sarcastic humor. In her youth, she was rebellious and resented her mother Evanora's cold and rigid treatment, to the point where she seemed happy upon learning of her death.

Abigail has always been very protective of her sister, defending her from her mother's abuse; at one point, the two planned to escape the coven together. When she discovered that Agatha was practicing Dark Magic, Abigail not only hid it, but also encouraged her to explore her abilities as a violet witch, to a point that Abigail even discovered that she was a violet witch herself. Abigail also supported her in her relationship with Rio Vidal, the Green Witch. When her nephew Nicholas Scratch died, Abigail was determined to reverse this, going so far as to risk her own life on the Witches' Road to try to find a way to bring him back.

Having witnessed the Salem witch trials, Abigail became obsessed with finding a way to protect mages from human persecution, eventually creating the New Salem coven and settling in a safe haven in Colorado. As Supreme Priestess of New Salem, Abigail maintained a balance between ruthless efficiency and care for the witches in the coven.
