Agatha Harkness, also known as the Violet Witch, is a witch from Salem, Massachusetts and the younger sister of Abigail Harkness. As a both a violet and a sapphire witch, Harkness was a very talented witch, but as she unlocked her powers from as violet witch, she was slowly corrupted by the dark magic. She was accused of practicing Dark Magic by her own coven during the Salem witch trials and ended up killing them all. She was Rio Vidal's best friend and eventually became her girlfriend, at some point she asked her to ressurect her older sister.

Agatha and Rio had twins called Natalia Harkness-Vidal and Nicholas Scratch, he was afflicted by a terminal illness which Vidal refused to heal, resulting in his death and Harkness grew to hate her, and eventually they broke up, her daughter Natalia grew to blame Harkness and Vidal and sought revenge on both. At the time, her older sister Abigail proposed that she and her sister walk the Witches' Road to bring Nicholas back. They gathered a coven and did so, but only she, Agatha, and Morgan le Fay, who was undercover, made it to the end. Morgan wanted to stop them from fulfilling their wishes and becoming the most powerful witch in the world, so Agatha used her wish to acquire the Darkhold to defeat le Fay and bring Nicholas back, she banished le Fay to the Dark Dimension but was unable to bring Nicholas back.

Over three hundred years later, she sensed the presence of chaos magic radiating from the Westview Anomaly created by Wanda Maximoff. Unfazed by her thrall over the population of Westview, Harkness became obsessed with harnessing Maximoff's magic, both to satisfy her hunger for power, but to bring her son back to life. Living under the pretense of the WandaVision sitcom, she stole Ralph Bohner's house and undertook the guise of Agnes, Maximoff's "nosy neighbor," all the while interfering with Maximoff's idyllic paradise to her own benefit. After discovering that Maximoff was the Scarlet Witch, Harkness was defeated and stripped of her magical abilities, indefinitely condemned to live out her life as Agnes in Westview.

With Vidal's help, Harkness managed to free herself from Scarlet Witch's spell, she tried to do spells only to remember that all of her magic was absorbed by Scarlet Witch. Harkness realized that now her main enemies, the Salem's Seven, would finally have a chance against her if they found her, so with the help of Billy Kaplan, reincarnation of one of Maximoff's sons, she gathered a coven of witches to be able to walk the Witches' Road, a magical dimension accessible only by magic users, being both an afterlife for them and an event known as Trials, a series of tests and challenges based on the fears, desires and defects of those involved, and those who manage to reach the end alive, would have a wish fulfilled. During Lilia Calderu's Trial, Vidal is revealed as Death due to Calderu's divination, Vidal then explains that she is actually the Reaper of Earth and an subordinate of Death.

Right before Vidal's Trial starts, Vidal is confronted by Lady Death herself, having attracted her attention by resurrecting Lilia Calderu and interrupting the Trials; Lady Death is determined to restore the balance by either taking Calderu or taking one of the coven members in her place. Lady Death is angried and calls the coven "agents of chaos", inspiring Harkness to formally name the coven as the Coven of Chaos. Despite the difficulty, Harkness and the coven manage to dissuade Lady Death and convince her that they can find someone for her to take, prompting Lady Death to back down and depose Vidal as the Reaper of Earth.

When Vidal's Trial finally begins, she has 30 minutes to heal from her "scar" and overcome her grudge and thirst for revenge against Harkness, which leads to an intense battle between Vidal and the Coven of Chaos, where Vidal finally sees the truth about Agatha Harkness and heals, passing her Trial.

At the end of the Witches' Road, Vidal then reveals herself as the Witches' Reaper and a subordinate of Lady Death, where she says that at first she wanted revenge against Harkness, and wanted to reach the end to find the Scarlet Witch and steal her magic to then take revenge on Harkness, but upon seeing that most of the Harkness' evil was due to the influence of the Dark Magic practiced by her, she gave up, then allied herself with Harkness and helped defeat Vertigo as the Road fulfilled her wish and restored her powers.

Personality[]

Agatha Harkness has been mainly shown by her alias, Agnes. Her quirkiness and humor granted her the main comedic role in the sitcom reality. She is often seen making jokes and comments for comedic relief. Once she is revealed as the witch Agatha Harkness, her demeanor becomes more sinister, though her personality for the most part seems to be similar to Agnes'. She is shown to be envious of Wanda Maximoff's raw magical potential and views Maximoff with contempt for squandering her magic on maintaining the fantasy within the Hex, believing that she is undeserving of her abilities.

Throughout their confrontation, Harkness criticizes Maximoff's less than heroic actions, such as her time in HYDRA and her imprisonment and torment of the citizens of Westview, further attempts to plant more seeds of doubt in her. Harkness is also arrogant, mocking Maximoff throughout their battle in Westview when she believes she has the upper hand; this turns out to be her undoing, as she unwittingly gives Maximoff the idea to use her original protection spell against her. Despite her negative persona and hunger for power, Harkness possesses a sense of justice within herself, as shown when she was able to tell Wanda's deeds weren't great for the state of reality across the universe. Despite her sense of justice, Agatha had no problem with deceiving people to achieve her goals, lying to Wanda that she would correct the flaws of the Westview anomaly in exchange for Wanda's magic. Nevertheless, Harkness was heavily obsessed with power, and would not hesitate to become the most powerful sorceress, resorting to dark magic to achieve it. Harkness values her magical knowledge and prowess greatly, being upset when Maximoff drained her of her magic and horrified when she learns Wanda intends to punish her by condemning her to an ordinary life in Westview as Agnes.

As the corrosive influence of Dark Magic dissolved, Harkness' true personality emerged, where despite retaining her selfish tendencies due to her Violet Witch instincts, Harkness became significantly less dark, becoming less arrogant and power-hungry, she has also shown some remorse for her past actions. Harkness ends up forming a genuine bond with her coven, becoming genuinely upset by Lilia and Alice's near deaths. Due to her heritage as a Violet Witch, Harkness' mother, Evanora, constantly told her that she was evil by birth and therefore cold and abusive, and according to Vidal, this would be the reason why Harkness was unable to control her ability to absorb the magic of other witches, and because of this she quickly gave in to the corruption of the Dark Magic.

Her grief over her long dead son becomes more evident, marking it as one of the things that moved her, also showing a deep grudge and thirst for revange against Vidal, which she once loved. Due to her mother being cold, Harkness vowed to never be like her, so she loved her son dearly, and also quickly became attached and started to act as a mother figure to Billy Kaplan as she thought he might be her son reeincarnated, and even when she finds out he isn't, she still retains maternal feelings towards him. When confronted by her children Natalia and Nicholas, Harkness displays a genuine sense of remorse, revealing that she blamed herself for the twins contracting smallpox and Nicholas's death, and constantly tried to make amends and apologize, eventually reconciling with Natalia. Harkness seemed genuinely upset that Nicholas had become so cold, ruthless, and vengeful that he found himself unable to forgive her, and expressed her constant frustration at being forced to fight him against her will, Harkness also reacted with horror to see that her son, like her, delighted in stealing magic from other witches.

Powers[]

  • Mage Physiology: Harkness is a witch, a race of human-like beings that are born with the ability to harness Magic.
    • Witchcraft: As a witch, Harkness have access to a specific kind of magic exclusive to witches known as Witchcraft, the ability to tap into this universe's infinite store of ambient magical energy and manipulate these to a variety of effects. A skill derived from three major sources: personal powers of the mind/soul/body, powers gained by tapping the universe's ambient magical energy and employing it for specific effects and finally, powers gained through the tapping of extra-dimensional energy by invoking entities or objects of power existing in mystical dimensions tangential to her own. The latter means of power is usually gained by the recitation of incantations. Although Witchcraft usually manifests as a luminescent blue mist or vapor, Agatha's magic turned purple due to Dark Witchcraft's corruptive influence.
      • Energy Manipulation: Harkness is able to shape her dark and mystical energy into tangible constructs and utilize it in various ways. When initially confronting Wanda Maximoff, she conjured magical bindings around her wrists and ankles to restrain her. Similarly, she was able to conjure magical strings to hold Billy Maximoff and Tommy Maximoff by their necks.
        • Energy Projection: Harkness could project powerful bolts and blasts of purple mystical energy from her hands. After absorbing the Chaos Magic from Maximoff's energy bolts, she was able to fire projectiles made of Chaos Magic and her Dark Magic combined.
        • Energy Detection: Harkness was initially drawn to the Westview Anomaly after sensing the “afterglow” of its complex network of spells.
        • Telekinesis: Harkness could control matter with her purple energy and was able to close a door with a single movement of her fingers as well as break energy binds placed on her by her coven during her trial. During her confrontation with Maximoff, she lifted several S.W.O.R.D. operatives a few stories into the air, outlining them with purple energy, before dropping them and letting Maximoff catch them with her own power.
        • Levitation: Harkness arrived flying to Westview. After being knocked over by Maximoff's energy blast, she was able to raise herself back onto her feet. She was able to fly at length during her confrontation against Scarlet Witch, and even managed to remain floating in the air despite the runes created by Scarlet Witch which had rendered Harkness' other magical attacks ineffective.
      • Mental Manipulation: Harkness' magic allows her to interact with and control the minds of others. She was able to make Herb, her neighbor, go along with her plan in confusing Vision. She was also able to control her pet Señor Scratchy and take control of a cicada with an incantation while demonstrating magic to Maximoff. She was able to project images of her exploits within Westview into Maximoff's mind and, when inside an illusory recreation of Maximoff's memories, was able to cause Maximoff to directly relive the experiences as well as pull her out of them at will. When Maximoff tried to trap her in an illusion of her trial by her coven, Harkness was able to turn the illusion against her, causing the corpses of her fellow witches to attack and briefly subdue Maximoff. In an attempt to turn the town of Westview on Maximoff, Harkness removed Maximoff's mind control from the citizens.
      • Psychic Shield: Harkness is able to resist telepathic intrusion and reality manipulation to a degree, as she was able to live inside the Westview Anomaly without it truly changing her or affecting her mind. Additionally, neither Billy nor Wanda Maximoff were able to sense her thoughts, with the latter's attempts to trap Harkness in an illusion failing to harm or restrain her, as Harkness simply took control over it away from Maximoff.
      • Spell Casting: Harkness could cast a variety of spells using gestures and verbal incantations. Along with Rio Vidal, Harkness was able to create life, notably casting a spell that brough their children to existence. Using a basic protection spell via magic runes on the walls of the structure beneath her house, Harkness was able to neutralize Maximoff's powers. As she explains to Maximoff, only the person who cast this spell can use magic in the radius of the protection spell's range. Harkness caused Maximoff to relive her memories using magic via a piece of her hair, which aided her in creating an illusory space inside a compartment of her basement lair that could realistically simulate events and locations from Wanda's past. She also chanted a Latin spell that allowed her to trans-mutate a cicada into a bird.
      • Transmutation: Harkness was able to change her appearance and witch costume for that of a normal neighbor. She was also able to change a cicada into a bird and back and hide the corruption of the Darkhold in her fingers.
      • Conjuration: Harkness was capable of causing the Darkhold to materialize out of a small purple portal to read the description of Maximoff's future as the Scarlet Witch before sending it back through it.
      • Enchantment: Harkness is capable of imbuing objects with supernatural powers, notably creating an enchanted necklace with a crystallum possession spell that allowed her to control Ralph Bohner, giving him the personality of a false Pietro Maximoff, as well as simulating the real Pietro's super speed. Additionally, the roots surrounding her basement lair were infused with her Witchcraft, as seen by Monica Rambeau.
      • Teleportation: Harkness has the ability to teleport herself and others, leaving a distinctive purple energy each time she uses this ability. She was able to teleport from within the Vision Residence to the street, and at the same time bring Billy and Tommy Maximoff from the basement of her house.
      • Elemental Manipulation: Harkness has the ability to manipulate the elements of nature, in particular fire. Harkness was able to light several torches by conjuring fire, as well as being able to shoot fire at her enemies.
    • Dark Magic: As a violet witch, Agatha was a very powerful and skilled user of Dark Magic. According to Harkness, some of her dark powers took years of study to master. After obtaining the Darkhold, Harkness used it to amplify her powers, which enhanced several of her spells allowing her to be unnoticed by other witches, like Wanda Maximoff.
      • Longevity: With the magic and life-force she absorbed from the witches of her coven, Harkness can live far beyond a normal human lifespan, having survived for more than 350 years.
      • Power Absorption: Harkness can absorb powers; assimilating supernatural abilities and powers directly from others even straight from the source, removing into herself and utilize it in various ways, enhancing herself with each new power drain expanding her arsenal of abilities. Due to abuse from her mother who constantly told her that she was evil by birth, Harkness was unable to control this ability, causing it to automatically activate whenever Harkness was blasted with magic. When Harkness was on trial she was capable of corrupting the magic from the witches of her coven, effectively siphoning their energies and killing them. Her abilities allowed her to absorb and convert Chaos Magic from Maximoff into her dark magic while simultaneously draining Maximoff's body of life each time Maximoff directly attacked her with her powers, allowing her to not only withstand Maximoff's attacks but also gain strength from them. Though, there is a caveat to this. In order to absorb an individual's power, Harkness specifically must be blasted by them and cannot remotely drain the power of others, and according to herself, she can't control this power properly, shown as Harkness absorbed Alice's magic involuntarily, Eventually, Harkness was able to gain full control over this ability, managing to absorbing Lilia and Billy's magic without absorbing their life force. After defeating Vertigo, Harkness absorbs Vertigo's magic without absorbing her life force.
        • Necromancy: After absorbing a Wakandan witch's magic, Harkness gained the ability to harness Necromancy. She tried to use Necromancy to bring her son, Nicholas Scratch, back, but was only able to bring back a heavy damaged corpse where his soul was barely able to stay binded. She considered resurrecting the real Pietro, but gave up because his body was on another continent and bullet-ridden.
        • Divination: After absorbing Lilia's magic, Harkness gained the ability to employ Divination, a method of reading the future, the present and the past and/or provide help to a problem at hand by using an occultic, standardized process or ritual.
          • Precognition: After absorbing Lilia's magic, Harkness gained precognitive abilities, where she can involuntarily see glimpses of the future. The most notable use of this ability is when Harkness unwittingly receives visions of a near future where Kang the Conqueror invades her universe.
          • Clairvoyance: After absorbing Lilia's magic, Harkness gained the ability to acquire information using sight outside the normal range of detection about an object, person, location, or physical event.
        • Protective Magic: After absorbing Alice's magic, Harkness gained the ability to use Protective Magic, a branch of magic dedicated to turn away and protect its user from any harm or evil.
          • Force-Field Generation: After absorbing Alice's magic, Harknes gained the ability to create highly durable barriers of orange energy that she can shape and manipulate as needed. She can use it to grab and break apart targets, protect others from enemy fire, contain a target or to cover and deflect attacks from enemies.
          • Magic Reflection: After absorbing Alice's magic, Harkness gained the ability to reflect magical attacks that are launched (long range or close melee attacks) against their enemies without being harmed. Harkness used this to reflect Vertigo's powerful energy blasts.
      • Physical Augmentation: After acquiring the Darkhold, Harkness could heighten her physical abilities. During the Battle of Westview, she was easily able to withstand being hit by a car by Wanda Maximoff.
      • Curse Inducement: Harkness can place a curse, a negative supernatural effect, on whatever she wish (people, places, objects, etc). Harkness was able to place a curse so that one of the witches in her mother's coven would be unable to die no matter what, eventually leaving her in a cadaverous state.
      • Possession: Harkness possesses the ability to possess the bodies of other beings and use them as her own. Using Dark Magic, Harkness was able to possess the body of an Irish witch to communicate with the Scarlet Witch despite being dead.
