Charles Chandler is a former US Air Force pilot & test pilot for NASA. In 1958, Charles & his younger brother Harold were doing an important test flight for the XF-13 rocket plane, an experimental aircraft capable of reaching the uppermost atmosphere. During the test flight, the rocket plane malfunctioned, & Charles sacrificed his life to save his brother; while his brother Hal watched, the radiation from the explosion seemingly disintegrated Chuck, who disappeared in a burst of light.
Although he was presumed deceased, Charles was actually trapped in a dimension somewhere in the Multiverse. He appeared to his brother Hal through his glasses. When the two brothers attempted to make physical contact with each other, they merged together to become the sentient 3-D Man.

As the 3-D Man, Chandler possesses roughly three times the physical abilities & sensory acuity of an ordinary human in peak condition & is capable of slightly superhuman strength & speed. His stamina, durability, agility & reflexes are also estimated to be superhuman, namely roughly triple that of a human in peak physical condition.

- In the Marvel Comics, Charles Chandler is an American test pilot who was abducted by Skrulls looking to use Earth as a strategic position in their war with the Kree. Escaping from the Skrull ship, and causing it to explode in the process, Charlie was engulfed in radiation as his brother Hal looked on. The explosion imprinted an image of Charlie on Hal's eyeglasses, and, through intense concentration, Hal could project Charlie into existence as The 3-D Man. However, this causes Hal to slip into a coma while Charlie is active. Through the years, the brothers traded consciousness and control of The 3-D Man, all while trying to balance a family. Eventually, the brothers would merge with a new 3-D Man, Delroy Garrett, Jr., before losing the powers all together.
