Chthon is one of the Elder Gods of Earth. Shortly after the Big Bang, its sentient primordial energies, known as the Demiurge, spawned all the Elder Gods, incluinding Chthon. Chthon spent most of his time studying the mystical forces of the universe and by that he created his own magical system, the Chaos Magic. Along with his brothers, Chthon would bless some of the first humans, creating the first witches, Chthon granted a woman the power to manipulate Chaos Magic, becoming the first Scarlet Witch. When his brother Set started to use dark powers to enhance his own, Chthon learnt how to use the dark side of the mystical forces of the universe, and throught it Chthon created Dark Magic, and became the first master of the Dark Arts ever, he also blessed a woman with the power to manipulate Dark Magic, she however was already a witch, and modified its system, creating Dark Magic and becoming first Violet Witch. The dark forces that made up Dark Magic proved more corrosive and damaging than he had anticipated, and began to corrupt Chthon just as they had corrupted Set, Chthon then began to degenerate into a demon. He also created several races of demons to serve him, such as the N'Garai.
Gaea, his sister who had not been corrupted, conceived with the help of the Demiurge, Atum, who had the objective of eliminating the demonized Elder Gods by consuming their powers and essences. Therefore, Chthon created Darkhold Castle on Mount Wundagore, where he transcribed all his knowledge and erected a throne for the Scarlet Witch, left some N'Garai to guard it and then he left for his own dimension, K'lay. Some time later, he and his brothers put their differences aside and created the Crossroads, a nexus that connected Earth to the realms of each of the Elder Gods, which would be neutral ground. Chthon then fell into a deep sleep for eons. Centuries later, in 2023, during the Battle of Earth, the large amount of cosmic energy released by two snaps with the six Infinity Stones in a short period caused reverberations that caused failures in the barrier between the worlds and awakened Chthon. Chthon was able to use his hive mind powers through some of the dimensional rifts to enslave and possess a human to be his temporary host, so he was drawn in when the current Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, created the Hex, Chthon resolved to infiltrate and possess Maximoff's body, mind, and soul, believing her to be his true host.
Chthon easily bypasses Hex's barriers and disguises himself as Jonathan Hopkings, the mayor's popular athlete son. He faces some difficulty as Agatha Harkness, the current Violet Witch, had also infiltrated the Hex and planned to train Maximoff, as well as control her and bring her to her side. Eventually when Agatha Harkness reveals her true identity, so does Chthon, and due to being an Elder God and the creator of Chaos Magic, even though he could not access his full power due to dimensional barriers, he was still a threat to the point where Harkness and Maximoff needed to team up to face him, they managed to cause great damage to their host, but Chthon took advantage of the corruption of Harkness's soul due to the use of Dark Magic and possessed her using his demonic hive mind, forcing Maximoff to fight against him at full strength, which leads Maximoff to absorb Harkness' magic and complete her transformation into Scarlet Witch, she then severs the mental link between Chthon and Harkness and places her under a spell that forces her to live as her character Agnes, also sending Chthon's host to his dimension.
A few months later, Chthon was on his realm when he felt a TVA Temporal Door opening and closing rapidly. Upon investigating, Chthon discovered a copy of the TVA Guidebook, which unbeknownst to him, was enchanted by She Who Remains. He began to study the book, and the spell in his mind implanted and fueled ambitions and visions of multiversal domination, so, had regenerated his host, he sought revenge, and he was stronger as he through the hive mind transferred all the fragments of his consciousness to his host and created new ones to maintain control of the N'Garai. Using a dimensional door unwillingly opened by the Scarlet Witch, Chthon was able to return to Earth. He then acquired one of the many copies of the Darkhold, a powerful grimoire created from the inscriptions in the Darkhold Castle, and which possessed virtually infinite magical knowledge. Chthon learned about the existence of America Chavez, who was a Fuertona, a race of beings native to the Utopian Parallel, the Demiurge's realm located outside the Multiverse and sought to steal her power and them conquer all realities. Chthon then used the book's spells to possess and send several creatures after her, such as the Ribboned Creature and the Gargantos, and when Chavez came to the Prime Reality, Chthon went after her personally, and he was confronted by Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, and the Masters of the Mystic Arts.
After managing to absorb part of Chavez's power, Chthon managed to open a portal and move to 838 Reality, where he massacred the Illuminati, he came close to being defeated when Captain Marvel, Jean Grey with the Phoenix Force and the Scarlet Witch possessing her 838 counterpart combined their powers, despite this Captain Marvel lost all her powers and was killed, Jean Gray suffered severe damage due to Chaos Magic and the Phoenix Force being opposing forces of nature that do not combine, and the Scarlet Witch's spell was broken and lost control over her 838 counterpart. He also easily defeated Professor X when the latter attempted to enter Chthon's subconscious and free his host from his possession.
He manages to briefly possess Chavez, open a portal and throws Strange and Christine to a random universe, and then he took her to Darkhold Castle, where he tries to absorb all of her powers permanently, but he is confronted by Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange possessing the corpse of his alternate self Defender Strange, Wong and Chavez herself. Together, they manage to banish his host to K'lay, indefinitely losing his only path and access to the Earthly Plane. However, he was arrested and pruned by the Time Variance Authority due to his crimes against the Multiverse, he was sent to the Void at the End of Time.
Chthon managed to survive in the Void, changing his name and appearence, being forced to meet with other variants of the Scarlet Witch, her allies and even benevolent variants of her enemies, forming the Coven of Chaos, a faction to survive Alioth, and they would also have fought against the faction of Cassandra Nova and be allies of the Legacy Heroes faction of X-23. When approached by Legacy Heroes alongside Deadpool and Wolverine, Chthon coordinated an attack on Cassandra Nova's compound, teaming up to attack her subordinates while Deadpool and Wolverine confronted Nova directly, later joining them. When Nova agreed to return them to their universe, Chthon chose to stay behind to gather his allies and restore them.
Eventually, at Deadpool's request, the TVA returned the disguised Chthon and the Legacy Heroes to their respective universes.
Personality[]
Known for his character on Hex, 'Jonathan Hopkins' was the stereotypical jock and popular boy, he was charming, confident and seductive, he was polite and friendly, he was also somewhat arrogant, being very proud of his body and could be dismissive towards those he considers inferior. His sense of humor was sharp and acidic.
This was however, a persona created to hide his true personality. Chthon was, in reality, a selfish, sadistic, cruel, manipulative, cold, narcissistic, homicidal, malevolent and megalomaniac demon-god. Chthon liked to enslave various inferior beings, suppressing their consciousness and taking control of their bodies, transforming them into loyal servants with varying degrees of autonomy, he could sometimes allow the host's true personality to regain control to distract his enemies, such as when during his confrontation with Maximoff in Westview, he repeatedly allowed his host to briefly regain control to upset Maximoff and terrorize the host, and when the latter was seriously injured, he quickly took possession of Agatha Harkness' body and continued their fight, showing no to have no care for its host, although part of this is due to the fact that its host has not suffered any permanent damage.
Chthon reveals his manipulative and persuasive side after being able to perfectly emulate the mind control experienced by the inhabitants of Westview in the Hex, to the point of fooling even an experienced witch like Harkness. Additionally, he reveals a narcissistic and megalomaniacal side to himself, having been very proud of his status as the Elder God of Chaos and the creator of Chaos Magic and Dark Magic, he is also shown to be casually sarcastic and cold, a demonstration of his arrogance, and despite this, he is surprisingly calm, even when insulted.
Chthon is difficult to anger, but when angered, his anger is said to be powerful and murderous, he becomes even more cruel and sadistic in this state. His anger is usually aroused when his plans have been interrupted several times, and even then, he still manages to maintain some self-control, but if provoked enough, he will demonstrate his more aggressive and violent side.
It is implied that in the past, like his sister Oshtur, Chthon was curious and fascinated by the mysteries of the cosmos, especially mystical forces, and he appeared to have a good relationship with his brothers, being described by Gaea as the most calm, empathetic and humble. However, the use of Dark Magic of his own creation ended up corrupting him, transforming him into a being that was part elder god and part demon, possibly the corruption transformed his curiosity and fascination into an obsession with control and power, transformed his empathy and humility into contempt and arrogance and pathological pride.
