The Defenders were a group made up of individualistic "outsiders" from across the Multiverse who were recruited by Doctor Strange to stop Wanda Maximoff, who was controlled by the Darkhold, from stealing America Chavez's powers to reunite with her children and unleashing Chthon to fulfill the "Scarlet Witch" prophecy. During the final battle, the team, consisting of Strange, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Mr. Fantastic, Blade, Ms. Marvel and Ghost Rider, fought against Karl Mordo's forces and were successful in apprehending Maximoff and swaying her from the Darkhold's influence, only to learn that she was controlled by Mephistopheles, who sought to control her and use her powers for his plans of domination. After the Ghost Rider freed Maximoff from Mephisto's control, the team brought Maximoff to Clint Barton's care after she destroyed every copy of the Darkhold in the Multiverse and each member returned to their respective universes.
