Work at Metro-General[]

Dating Stephen Strange[]

Gina Atwater began working at Metro-General Hospital in the ER, where she developed a relationship with Stephen Vincent Strange, a fellow surgeon who she had worked alongside. During their relationship, Gina would attend Stephen's talks, however, she never enjoyed them as it was only about Stephen. This self-obsession would then become the reason Gina decided to end their relationship. After this relationship, Gina decided to create a rule to never date colleagues, which she entitled the Strange Policy. Despite this, Gina still remained one of Strange's closest friends and continued to work alongside him, even inventing a laminectomy procedure together.

Seeking a Second Opinion[]

While working in the ER with her friend Nicodemus West, they were met by Doctor Keith Wilmott, who told them that a patient with a bullet in his brain deceased, which caused Gina to feel unsure about the decision while Nicodemus argued that the man could be saved. Despite how Doctor West was willing to find something that could save the patient's life, Gina decided to find Stephen Strange to get his opinion, knowing he was more qualified. She called Doctor Strange out from surgery and informed him of the patient. After looking through the reports, Stephen was able to realize that the patient was in fact still alive, so they rushed down to save the patient.

When they found Nicodemus West arguing with Keith Wilmott, who was about to harvest the patient's organs, Gina and Stephen managed to stop Wilmott from proceeding and told him that the patient was still alive. Just as Stephen took the patient and went to perform surgery, having Gina and Nicodemus assist him. During the surgery, Gina and Nicodemus thank Stephen for his help, and they were able to successfully remove the bullet from the patient, saving the patient's life. Along with Nicodemus and Stephen, Gina then went to inform the family of the patient that he was alive.

The Strange Policy[]

After saving the patient and gave Nicodemus a toast for their success, Gina was walking down the hall just when Stephen caught up with her. She told Stephen that he didn't have to humiliate Keith Wilmott in front of everyone, which Stephen arrogantly responded that he or Doctor West didn't have to save the patient either. Gina, not wanting to feed his ego, claimed that she only needed a second opinion on the patient, but Stephen told her that she needed a competent opinion. This then led to Gina suggesting that Stephen should become her neurosurgeon on call as he could be doing more work in the ER. However, he declined, stating that his work would save more lives, which Gina corrected, in that there wasn't any fame for him there, as that was all that he cared about. Accepting Strange's rejection, Gina then decided she would stick with Doctor West as her neurosurgeon.

However, this made Stephen assume a sexual relationship was occurring between Gina Atwater and Keith Wilmott, to his disgust. Gina declined Doctor Strange's suspicions, revealing that her strict rule about dating colleagues that was named after him. After learning about the Strange Policy, Stephen sarcastically stated that he was glad something was named after him, unlike the surgical techniques he developed, which Gina corrected in acknowledging her contribution to those techniques. then informed Gina that he was talking at a Neurological Society dinner later that night, inviting her to attend. Gina accepted Stephen's invitation and went back to her apartment to make preparations for tonight's get together.

Gina Atwater is picked up by her fiancee Stephen Vincent Strange to go on a date.

One day, Gina Atwater had watched Stephen Vincent Strange performed a successful radical hemispherectomy, which they viewed as something worth celebrating. Later during the night, Stephen arrived at Gina's apartment to take her out at a dinner party. However, on their way to dinner along a cliffside, their vehicle was crashed by another car, and it toppled off the road through the cliff before crashing into a nearby river bank. While Gina miraculously survived, Stephen didn't.

Mourning the lost over Stephen for past few days since the accident, Gina attended her friend's funeral, along with Nicodemus West, Keith Wilmott, her family, and even Strange's family. After the funeral ended, Gina was joined with Nicodemus, who offered to take her out to dinner as a way to make her feel better, but she refused since she needed time to recover from the accident. Once she got back in her car, Gina continued to grieve over Stephen's death while Nicodemus watched her.

Meeting the Ancient One[]

One day while in her apartment, Gina was having a moment alone after she had just finished work until Nicodemus West came to her apartment in hopes to try and make her feel better. Gina tells him that she can't let go of her love over Stephen and continued to feel alone without him. Nicodemus tells her that she's not alone and reveals that he grieved over the lost someone close to him during a car accident and nearly died until he was rescued by a known samaritan who brought him into a mystical society that healed him over his grief and that it changed his life around. Gina asked if this society could help her, to which Nicodemus smiled that it would and asked her if she will not freak out of what he will do, to which Gina, who thought it was a joke, sarcastically responded that she won't.

Once Nicodemus uses a Sling Ring to create a portal, Gina jumped backwards when she freaked out of what she was seeing. Thinking it was the whiskey she had, she thought it was just a mere illusion, to which Doctor West tells her that it isn't. Nicodemus gives Gina a choice to either accompany him to meet with his master the Ancient One that can help her or can continue to remain as she is for the rest of her life. Deciding to take her friend's offer, Gina went through the portal, leading her to Kamar-Taj. She turned around and asked Nicodemus if he's coming, to which he tells her that he won't, but promises to come by and see how her life in the Masters of the Mystic Arts will change her. Before closing the portal, Doctor West wishes her luck, thus leaving Gina inside one of the training grounds of Kamar-Taj.

After being escorted by Jules St. Thomas, who was one of the Ancient One's top students in the Masters of the Mystic Arts, Gina was introduced to the Sorceress Supreme and began asking how she helped Nicodemus West. The Ancient One explained how he suffered and trained him for years to heal him of his grief and changed him into a proud sorcerer. Gina was confused and demanded to know how this even happened just before the Ancient One then pushed her astral form out her body to present her with his first experience of the Astral Plane, much to Gina's horror. Gina was shocked, but denied what just happened, thinking she had been drugged, although the Ancient One insisted all she gave her was tea with a little honey.

Seeking to show Gina more of what she could offer, the Ancient One introduced herself as Morgan Erskine and began to send Gina through the Multiverse, showing her the various realities before dragging her back when Jules claimed that her heart rate was spiking, although Morgan said she was fine. Gina was sent back through the Multiverse where he was told that the reality she knew was simply one of many. The Ancient One spoke to her while she was still being flung across all the different realities, challenging her to open her eyes to these possibilities while she had visions of the Microverse and the Dark Dimension, for she saw a glance of the terrifying Dormammu. The Ancient One made Gina question who she was within this Multiverse, while she encountered sights and senses beyond her wildest imaginations.

Having experienced something was unexplainable, Gina was then back into the room within Kamar-Taj and questioned if she had ever had an experience like that in a gift shop. Barely recovering from the revelations shown to her, Gina begs the Ancient One to teach her how to do this, to which Sorceress Erskine promises her that she will since she saw that she carried a sense kindness in he heart and always cares for people.

Once she was accepted into the Masters of the Mystic Arts, Gina was shown into his room by Jules, who advised Gina to use her time to rest and meditate until the Ancient One had called for her in the morning. When Gina was handed a piece of paper reading Shamballa, she questioned if this was now her mantra, to which Jules explained that it was their Wi-Fi password. Once alone, Gina took a moment to meditate and began to remember her past life of when Stephen was still alive.
