Grant Douglas Ward is a runaway young man from Brisbane who eventually found himself on the streets after abandoning a childhood of abuse inflicted by his family, especially his mother, who tormented him and his brother Christian and sister, but spared their younger brother Thomas, who was her favorite. Having protected Thomas and his sister from Christian's abuse, as well as their mother's, the stress proved too much for Grant in the end and he eventually fled his home.
During his teenage years, Grant and his girlfriend, Skye, both nursed hatred against the growing infringement of America in their country, believing firmly that it was the ties that America had on Australia that was responsible for all the sufferings Australia had faced from other countries and subsequently sought to purge the country of oppression, rallying to many anti-American protests and movements against S.H.I.E.L.D., whilst also befriending Catra and Rabastan D'Memirel, Scorpia, Adora Firstborn and Entrapta, with whom they led the public outcries against foreign power, becoming leading members of the Rising Tide. Years later, in an effort to help purge their country of strife, the couple joined HYDRA and agreed to undergo experiments with the Scepter under the supervision of Baron Strucker, with the Mind Stone gaining Ward super-strength and enhanced reflexes, becoming a super soldier. When HYDRA fell, the twins and their friends, who had also undergone experiments and emerged alive, joined Ultron to get their revenge, but abandoned him when they discovered his true intentions to eradicate humanity. Ward, Skye and their friends joined the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. during the Battle of Brisbane to stop Ultron; Rabastan was killed during the battle but the rest survived, and shortly after relocated to the Triskelion in the United States of America, joining S.H.I.E.L.D.. Skye and Ward subsequently became members of Victoria Hand's Team.
Trained briefly at S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, Ward, as a member of Hand's Team, worked with them on all their missions and established good friendships with Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Mark Smith as they worked together in numerous expeditions, which revolved primarily around the investigation of mysterious events. During the HYDRA Uprising, Ward was an active participant in hunting for John Garrett and the rest of the Centipede Project, despite the mistrust he and Skye faced from some agents as a result of their past with the terrorist organization. He was shocked and saddened to learn that Smith had been a member of HYDRA spying on them but accepted it easier than some of his teammates. Despite this and despite only having been recently recruited to the agency, Ward remained loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Victoria Hand, working alongside her to fight HYDRA and protect the world. As a result, he accompanied Hand and the rest of the team to the Providence Base while on the run from the United States Armed Forces, then accompanying Hand, Antoine Triplett, Melinda May and his girlfriend Skye in an attack on Centipede's Barbershop HQ, then on Cybertek, where he helped divert attention, using his powers to remove power from all electronics and aided in incapacitating the Deathlok Soldiers present while Skye and May dealt with Smith. Despite being labelled a terrorist by the law, Ward, following the defeat of Centipede, proceeded to accompany Victoria Hand, her team and Phil Coulson to the Playground, where they began to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. under Victoria Hand and Coulson's leadership.

Working at the Kullersun Fissure[]
Encouraging socialization in his kid[]
Though his work as the Chief of Security for I.C.A.R.U.S. was work that was both demanding and took up a lot of his time, Grant Ward ensured that he also had time to enjoy activities with his partner and adoptive children. However, to both his and Daisy Johnson's dismay, their adopted daughter, Alex, demonstrated no desire to socialize the small group of youngsters in Rakke Town, instead preferring to remain in her room, despite several attempts made by Ward and Daisy to cajole her into participating into outdoor activities. Among these examples was a night when the recent earthquake activities caused all projects to be put on hold, thus allowing Grant Ward and Daisy to take the night off, which they chose to dedicate to firefly catching. Entering Alex's room to find her (as usual) on her computer, Grant Ward made their presence known and, alongside Daisy, explained their evening plans. Holding up his torch which he turned on, then off, to demonstrate their intent, Alex cut off her parents, however, to inquire if such an event included her going outdoors, which Ward, after a moment's hesitation, confirmed awkwardly. Rakke Town, however, was suddenly the victim of another minor quake that both Johnson and Ward answered by engaging in their 'safety protocol', which involved both donning protective helmets and Ward swiftly racing to find Jacen in his room, wherein which the two hid under Jacen's desk while Daisy did the same in the room belonging to Alex, who's chair had it's own protective features. Returning with Jacen as the trembling subsided, a sheepish grin on his face, Ward was disappointed to find Alex adamantly refusing to go, despite Daisy's reminder that during their brief life in Californa, earthquakes had been common, and inquired if she desired to speak about her feelings, suggesting the firefly walk could be a solution. Alex, however, was still afraid of nature and opted to remain inside, which Ward, though sad, realized he could not pressure into joining them and instead chose to leave, although he left a flashlight on Alex's bed, justifying it as being just in case. Outside Alex's room, Ward privately told Daisy how he wished their daughter had at least one friend.
