- "I am Rio, the Green Witch, Upholder of the Sacred Balance. I am the agent of the natural order, with nature at my side. I break the earthly chains and set the spirit free. My days shall not know an end, for I am the Herald of Death. The Grim Reaper. The Destroyer of Worlds."
- ―Rio Vidal
Rio Vidal is the current Green Witch. She met the violet witch Agatha Harkness and became lovers, they had twins, Natalia Harkness-Vidal and Nicholas Scratch, but her son died because of a illness which she couldn't heal because Death prevented her from doing so, and after her son's death. Abigail, Agatha's sister proposed Vidal to go with her and her coven to the Witches' Road to bring him back. After defeating Morgan le Fay there, Vidal refused to give up, so she fell into a vengeful spiral, where she confronted Death herself and was able to seriously harm her avatar. Sensing her potential, Death elevated Vidal to a Herald of Death, assigned to uphold the "death" portion of the cosmic balance of life and death on the planet Earth, which corrupted her into a murderous witch.
Agatha was able to saciate Vidal's blood thirst for a while, but eventually, Vidal's ambitions beyond control, so Agatha sealed her away in the Witches' Underworld. Nearly three centuries later, when Harkness was defeated and mentally enthralled by the Scarlet Witch, Vidal was eventually able to break free from her prision. Vidal freed Harkness from a spell she had been placed under by Scarlet Witch and sent the Salem Seven, a coven with a grudge against Harkness, after her. Later, Vidal was summoned to the Witches' Road by Harkness and her coven, who had escaped the Seven when they attacked, as a replacement green witch. Rio came into conflict with Harkness on the Road because she wanted to claim the soul of Billy Maximoff. The tension came to a head in a vicious duel, during which Harkness sacrificed herself to Rio to save Maximoff.
Personality[]
- "You're calling me 'evil'? I am the natural order of all things, baby. And you love me!"
- ―Rio Vidal
Rio Vidal demonstrated a personality very simillar to her prime reality counterpart in the past. After becoming a Herald of Death, Rio was dealing with slowly growing killing instincts and blood lust, and while she initially fought and resisted, eventually, she fell under the influence of these instincts, which has deeply corrupted her heart, and so, her personality became darker, with extreme levels of aggression and wrath. She also became more distrusting and suspicious, and more hate-filled, and she no longer empathized with others, she cared only for herself and what she needed.
Rio is driven by intense emotions, particularly her desire for revenge against Agatha Harkness for imprisioning her. While she recognizes her capacity for emotion, it is clear that this thirst for vengeance has tainted her, making her unpredictable, violent, and dangerous, while also showing a raging, impatient, volatile, and supremely ambitious personality, which makes her prone to killing or maiming anyone who stood in her way. This is evident when she immediately attacks Harkness following her release from Scarlet Witch's spell, showcasing her impulsive aggression and lack of restraint.
Her ruthless nature is further underscored by her manipulative tendencies. Rio is highly calculated, skillfully embedding herself into Harkness’s mind and pulling the necessary strings to manipulate her, with the ultimate goal of freeing her former lover from the spell. Although she acknowledges her feelings for Harkness and agrees to distance herself due to Harkness' vulnerability, her actions suggest otherwise. Her true intent becomes clear when she sends the Salem Seven, a powerful coven, after Harkness. Rio remains fearless and composed, even in perilous situations. When summoned to the Witches' Road, a dimension full of trials, she walks it without any sign of fear or hesitation, unfazed by the dangers around her.
Rio's violent tendencies are apparent in her interactions with Harkness, particularly when she expresses growing impatience. She candidly admits to Agatha that she felt like hurting her coven, revealing her aggressive nature. This statement, delivered with a smile, suggests she takes some pleasure in the chaos violence brings. Her reaction to being called psychotic by Jennifer Kale further emphasizes her volatile disposition, rather than taking offense, Rio seems to accept the label. Rio's sadistic nature is shown when she appears to take pleasure on taunting others rather than just killing them right away, like when she taunts Lilia by taking Death's form and playing on her trauma and fear of death, and also seemed to be completely dismissive of the coven's distress while nearly dying during the fight agains the Wu Family Curse, and she also tries to kill Agatha and Billy multiple times, later even offering them to leave one walk away alive if the other stayed with her. Rio, however, is not without some honor, as after claiming Agatha's life, she honored her deal and let Billy alone.
