Harold "Hal" Chandler Sr. is the younger brother of Charles Chandler. At his brother's request, Hal reluctantly joined NASA in 1958 to become more mature & responsible. During a test flight, the rocket plane malfunctioned, & Charles sacrificed his life to save his brother. While his brother Hal watched, the radiation from the explosion seemingly disintegrated Chuck, who disappeared in a burst of light.
The tragedy left Hal nearly crippled & shaken as he struggled to move on in life. Hal later discovered, however, that the light burst had imprinted an image of Chuck on each lens of his eyeglasses. It was revealed that Chuck was stuck in a dimension somewhere in the Multiverse, & he only appeared to Hal. When the two brothers attempted to make physical contact with each other, they merged together to become the sentient 3-D Man.
