The Illuminati was the name of a grand intergalactic society that was founded by Stephen Vincent Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Everyone associated with the Illuminati swore a pact to make sure to protect their universe from high level threats, such as powerful beings and universe incursions.

In 2017, following the retirement of the Avengers when Tony Stark, Henry Jonathan Pym, and Robert Bruce Banner were successful in completing the implementation of the Ultron Program, Stephen Vincent Strange, who was chosen by Morgan Erskine to take her place as Sorcerer Supreme of the Mystic Arts, decided to create an intergalactic organization that was to protect the whole universe from any danger.
