Lance Halstan was a HYDRA infiltrator who posed as a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. He had been indoctrinated into the ideology of HYDRA during his education with the HYDRA Preparatory Academy, for whom he took on a role as a double agent deep within S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ranks. During these years of service working undercover, Lance had become close friends with Phil Coulson, in which he was among the agents assigned to an investigation of a mysterious hammer in New Mexico, which had been directly linked to Thor. In the aftermath of the Battle of New York, Lance was been assigned with the Superhuman Restraint Unit team to transport Loki's Scepter away to HYDRA's laboratories, and recruited Benjamin Pollack and Claire Weiss despite orders to terminate them.
While he continued to keep his allegiance to HYDRA a secret, it turns out that Lance had been abducted by Skrulls that were part of the Radical Skrull Faction and placed inside a fracking pod while Sarro T'llrk took on his form and resumed in helping Pilli Natu to anniliate every trace of humanity with the use of HYDRA's Project Insight. Even though, HYDRA had failed in its mission to eliminate their enemies, Lance continued to remain in stasis for years until he would eventually be free by S'Byll, who had just defeated Gravik and ended the Secret Invasion. However, due to his past connection with HYDRA, he would be arrested by the authorities.
