Amara Laufeydottir, known as She Who Remains, is a variant of Loki who won the Battle of New York and conquered Earth, after which she conquered the other nine main kingdoms of Yggdrasil and gathered all the Infinity Stones, at that time she was called Goddess Queen. She would enter into several conflicts with various beings who tried to overthrow her empire.

After an incident with Kree General Dar-Benn, who opened a hole in space-time and triggered an incursion, Amara manages to repair it but then discovers the existence of the Multiverse, and uses the power of the Infinity Stones to communicate and interact with other realities, and along with other variants, joined the Multiversal High Council.

However, an incident involving a Loki variant caused Amara's reality to be completely destroyed in an incursion. Amara blames the Multiversal High Council for not taking action to prevent incursions, and seeing the rise of Kang the Conqueror, she goes on a crusade to save the Multiverse, starting the Multiversal War. In the Multiversal War, Amara took on the name She Who Remains and gathered an army of variants from various realities, and eventually she became a Goddess of Stories, able to harness the power of the Seventh Dimension, and thus she wins the war by erasing all realities except the Prime Reality, defeating Kang and all his variants, and she traps and isolates it into one single timeline in loop, and Amara's army then becomes the Time Variance Authority, and Amara eventually founds the Void and the Citadel at the End of Time.

Tired of ruling, Amara guides Sylvie, a female variant of Loki and a variant that emerged during the Avengers' Time Heist, to the Citadel to determine her fate, where they could take her place or they could prune her and allow the Multiverse to return to exist. After a brief duel, Sylvie prunes Amara sending her to the Void at the End of Time for eternity. Before being banished, Amara was put under a spell by Sylvie, the spell suppressing Amara's personality and powers and trapping her in an extremely convincing false reality, and externally, replacing Amara's personality with a new amnesiac personality. Amara was also able to put a spell in Loki and turn him to a God of Stories.

Amara was later consulted by a confused Loki, he weakens Sylvie's spell, allowing Amara to regain consciousness and free herself, while recovering her powers, and she is taken to the TVA, she instructs him to do what she did, erase the branches, stop the return of the Multiverse and then take over the TVA. But, Loki become inspirated to do a different thing, and then he returns Amara to the Void and destroys the Temporal Loom only to use his magic to become the Loom itself, organizing the Multiverse in a tree resembling Yggdrasil. The multiversal Yggdrasil is visible in the Void at the End of Time as it exists outside of space-time, this makes Amara emotional with longing for her old home.

Amara decided to live and start a new life there, so with her immense powers, she gathered all Loki Variants existent in the Void and merged all their factions into one called Loki Society. Loki Society controls and have influence over a great part of the center of the Void.

Upon becoming the God of Stories, Loki discovered that She Who Remains had a protocol known as the Alpha & Omega Sanction, a series of contingency plans whose objective was to awaken various beings around the Multiverse, such as Kang the Conqueror, Chthon, the High Evolutionary, Doctor Doom and others, and have them fight for succession giving them a TVA Guidebook and fueling visions of absolute control of the Multiverse, triggering the Multiversal War, and the final plan would involve a variant of herself, known as The Goddess Who Restores All, winning the war, dethroning Loki and restoring everything to the original state, where Amara would kill her then possess her body, and this protocol has already being executed succesfully "a few dozen times". The protocol followed perfectly until the end, being only partially changed when Loki and the heroes managed to convince The Goddess Who Restores Everything to maintain the Multiverse and follow Loki's methods, frustarting Amara's plan to return to power and trapping her in the Void permanently.

Personality[]

Amara had a playful, but almost unhinged personality. But beneath the guise of a carefree being, she was a goddess who had lived over a million lifetimes and had seen so much hardship, explaining her flippancy. This led her to develop a "lesser of two evils" and "the ends justify the means" view, believing that eliminating branching timelines was, athough evil, necessary to prevent uprising of other Kangs. As such, she was honest about the amoral nature of her actions, yet remained convinced that her actions were the least possible evil out of all potential outcomes, and that her control of the Multiverse preserved stability in a single timeline in order to prevent the uprise of an even greater evil.

Due to the nature of the multiversal threat of Kangs, Amara held the firm belief that only the Sacred Timeline was worth preserving and others should all be destroyed in a rigid manner. To this end, Amara did everything to ensure that she held the ultimate power, reflecting that despite her goals for peace were different with her variants' plans to conquer, Amara was as power-hungry as the other Variants. Not only did Amara establish the TVA to prune all timelines that she deemed going off track, Amara also developed the Temporal Loom as a failsafe device which would ensure that whatever happened, only the Sacred Timeline remained. She even planned after her death, so that another variant of her choice would take her place. She also decided to betray her subordinate Ravonna Renslayer and wipe the memories of all TVA employees while hiding at the End of Time herself to preserve power. All of these measures indicates Amara' firm belief in retaining power for the greater good.
