- "Who or what is a Man-Thing?"
- ―Maria Hill to Pepper Potts
Dr. Theodore "Ted" Sallis was a biochemistry professor who created a serum that made people immune to all toxic biochemicals but it also turned them into monsters. When A.I.M. sought the formula for their evil evil deeds, Sallis injected himself with the serum as a last act of defense & a way too avoid his serum falling in the wrong hands. As a result, he mutated into a swamp monster called the Man-Thing.
Man-Thing was since then monitored by S.H.I.E.L.D.. He also was a powerful fighter & was one of the warriors who gained the title of Champion of the Contest of Champions of Sakaar.
Man-Thing was later recruited by Nick Fury to join his new team, the Howling Commandos.
Biography[]
Origin[]
Dr. Ted Sallis was a biochemistry professor who worked at Empire State University. The United States Army recruited him into "Project Sulfur," which aimed to allow soldiers to survive bio-chemical warfare. With the army, Sallis developed "Serum SO-2," which gave its user immunity to all known toxic biochemicals. However, it became unusable when it was discovered that it had a side-effect: turning its users into monsters.
While on a trip to the Florida Everglades, Sallis was ambushed by A.I.M. agents, who desired the formula for their own evil ends. He injected himself with the serum, but after crashing in a swamp & apparently drowning, he was transformed into a swamp creature through a combination of his formula &, as later explained, magical forces existing in the area. Sallis's mind was lost, although, on rare occasions, he could briefly return to consciousness within his monstrous form & even to his human form.
Monitored by SHIELD[]
Man-Thing was among the many creatures that were imprisoned at the Fridge & being observed by S.H.I.E.L.D. During the HYDRA Uprising, S.H.I.E.L.D. was dissolved & all of its files were publicized, including those regarding the Man-Thing & his background. It was briefly mentioned during a conversation between Pepper Potts & former S.H.I.E.L.D. Deputy Director Maria Hill as she was leaving a Congressional hearing. Hill was giving Potts a list of the questions asked her regarding the Raid of the Fridge & one was pertaining to the identity of Man-Thing.
Champions of Sakaar[]
Following his liberation from the Fridge, Man-Thing somehow left Earth & became stranded on Sakaar, where he was imprisoned by the Grandmaster & was forced to fight in his Contest of Champions. Man-Thing won many fights in the Grand Arena, gaining the praise of the Grandmaster, who granted him the title of Champion of Sakaar & dedicated him a sculpture on the facade of his palace.

Personality[]
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Man-Thing Physiology: Man-Thing is a being composed of vegetable matter formed by a mixture of mystical energy & swamp mutagens.
- Malleability: He is also able to pass through many fences by oozing through the gaps in the chain links. He can also shape & elongate his limbs to grab people or create blade like weapons from a bark like material.
- Flight: Man-Thing is capable of self propelled flight.
- Superhuman Strength: He possesses a level of super-strength. He has been shown able to lift a 2,000 pound automobile. Supposedly his might is limitless as he's the living embodiment of the Earth's life-force, making him one of the physically strongest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Chlorokinesis: Man-Thing possessing the ability to control & manipulate plant life.
- Superhuman Durability: Its porous form is resistant to most physical attacks because it is not entirely solid; a fist or a bullet will usually pass right through it.
- Empathy/Acidic Secretion: As the Man-Thing, Ted's "brain" is no longer centrally located as when he was human: mutated analogs of his brain cells are unevenly distributed throughout the volume of his head & torso. Inhuman in its functions, his "brain" is incapable of reason, thought, or long-term memory. The Man-Thing does have a sensory apparatus, the location & nature of which is unknown, which is able to empathically sense the emotions of other organisms. Unless stimulated by external emotion, the Man-Thing remains inert. Sensing emotion, he will seek out its source, his pace determined by the intensity of the emotion. Mild emotions provoke "curiosity," causing him to draw near & "observe." Violent emotion will provoke him to seek out the source and attack it. He does not possess emotions himself. Violent emotions in others cause him some form of extreme discomfort, which produces a physical reaction on the surface of his body. In response to emotional provocation, his body produces fuming sulfuric acid which can cause severe burns when in contact with the flesh of emoting beings. When the being ceases to radiate emotion, the Man-Thing's body ceases production of acid & secretes a mild, soapy mucus that tends to neutralize the acid. The Man-Thing will only attack a being that emotionally provokes him. This ability extends to parts of his own body that are no longer attached to him, as he was able to connect with portions of himself which had been consumed by humans who feared him, thus causing those consumed parts of his body to secrete acid & burn through their bodies from the inside out.
- Size Enhancement: When fueled by enough fear Man-Thing can grow to monolithic proportions.
- Regeneration/Reformation: Man-Thing is capable of regenerating his body from plant & vegetable matter, especially that found in his swamp. He is able to remake his body even when believed to be near death & can form tendrils to seek out any matter with which to aid his regeneration.
