Marissa Bernal was the daughter of a Turkish woman and a Mexican man who worked as a businessman in America. Growing up in Jersey City, she was a student at Coles Academic High School and one of Karina Karuso's best friends. Torn between her American lifestyle and her Muslim beliefs, she decided to run to become a board member of the Muslim American Community Association and convey progressive ideas inside the Islamic Masjid of Jersey City, which she succeeded while defending the mosque against the disrespectful incursions of the Damage Control. Initially ignoring that her friend Karina was the newly appeared superhero in Jersey City, Marissa was wary of her actions, considering that it drew too much unwanted attention onto the local Muslim community. Despite being upset upon discovering the truth, she and Karina were able to reconcile, and both helped to protect Kamran against Damage Control.
