Matthew Banham was a Corrections Officer who worked for the New York City Police Department, but was known to have ties with HYDRA. Following the HYDRA Uprising, Officer Banham went on the run after being branded an enemy of the state by the United States government. Relying on his skills and ingenuity to survive like other wanted criminals around the world, he traveled to Madripoor and called himself Jackhammer. While as a mercenary in the aftermath of the Snap, Banham was recruited by the Power Broker, who gave him superhuman strength from a treatment at the Power Broker, Inc.. For the last few years, Matthew worked as loyal enforcer to the Power Broker and was given an important assignment in tracking down a person, who was using his boss' codename.

In 2018, Matthew Banham was a survivor of the Snap, a massive fallout incited by Thanos Rex during the Infinity War in which half of all life in the universe was exterminated. For the last five years, Matthew was highly loyal to the Power Broker and worked as one of his best enforcers in Madripoor. At some point following the defeat of the U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M., resulting the death of Karli Morgenthau, Banham was later contacted by Doctor Karlin Malus, who hired him to track down a person who was using his boss' name and to be brought alive.
