- "I was a mutant."
- ―Namor
Mutants are a series of enhanced species that possess specific genetic mutations that grants them unique superhuman abilities or distinct physical characteristics. Usually, the term mutants refer to Homo superior, a race that evolved from Homo sapiens. However, multiple other species, such as the Talokanil, are able to develop mutations and those individuals would also be classified as mutants.
History[]
Creation[]
The mutant gene was created due to genetic experiments made by the Celestials in a lot of species creating a extra gene, which would become known as the X-Gene, that if activated would give the individual superhuman abilities. In humans, the gene was introduced in Homo erectus, and passed through the humans species, until Homo neanderthals split into Homo sapiens and Homo superior, the human mutants.
The Talokanil Mutant[]
- "The plant gave me wings on my ankles, and ears that point into the clouds."
- ―Namor to Shuri
In order to survive the smallpox that was brought by the Spaniards, the inhabitants of a small Mayan village in the Yucatán ingested a herb that was found in the ocean, which unknown to them was affected by vibranium. Fen, who was already pregnant with her child, ingested the herb along with the rest of her tribe. The herb affected their anatomy and biology, making them unable to breathe out of the water. The entire village then left the surface to live underwater, where Talokan was founded. Due to the effects of the herb, Fen's son was born with the ability to breathe both inland and underwater. In addition to his Talokanil physical traits, the child also had a mutation that manifested as a pair of wings on both ankles, which allowed him to fly, pointy ears and an extended lifespan. He became the King of Talokan, and his mutation led to him being venerated as K'uk'ulkan, the Feather Serpent God. However, he took the name Namor for his enemies, after he had been dubbed "el Niño sin Amor" by a dying priest.
19th Century[]
From 1840 to 1870, there was a small yet significant increase in the mutant population given to the stress and traumas caused by the great wars that happened at that time.
First mutant boom[]
Given to the constant wars that happened between 1890 and the first decade of 20th century, such as the Spanish-American War, World War I and the Boxer Rebellion, it triggered the first mutant boom. This led to a mass activation of the X-Gene, most of the mutants known today were born after this time, however, for fear of opression and prejudice, most mutants hid their powers.
Maximoff Twins[]
Pietro and Wanda Maximoff participated HYDRA's experiments with the Mind Stone, unbeknownst to them, their biological father was a mutant, so they unlocked their mutant gene, with Pietro developing superhuman speed and Wanda developing the ability to harness the Chaos Magic. However, unbeknowest to them, Wanda actually activated her mother's witch gene instead, and her mutant gene was totally supressed by that.
Captain Rambeau[]
After crossing the Scarlet Witch's Hex, Monica unlocked her mutant gene, developing the ability to see and manipulate the whole electromagnetic spectrum.
The Mutant Trihybrid[]
- "Kamala, there's something different in your genes. Like... Like a mutation."
- ―Bruno Carrelli to Ms. Marvel
In 2025, once Ms. Marvel, descendent of a Djinn, wore one of the Quantum Band, she became able to unlock the full potential of the Quantum Zone. The sudden manifestation of her powers led to her friend Bruno Carrelli examine Khan's genes.
Bruno Carrelli discovered that Ms. Marvel's genetics was different from her family's due to a mutation in her genes. He quickly found Khan and relayed this important information to her, and that her Noor powers were actually from her mutation, and her Djinn genes remained dormant. As mutants were not a known race at the time, Khan simply responded that whatever that meant, it would just be another label to classify people with powers. She then brushed it off.
Later in 2026, Kamala find out that she also had Inhuman heritage and her powers could be unlocked by Terrigenesis, and she decided to pass through this so she may gain some power against Dar-Benn, and she gained shapeshifiting, portal manipulation and dimensional travel abilities.
Bruno Carrelli re-examined Khan's genes and said that activating the her Inhuman genes suppressed her Djinn even more, making it very unlikely they would ever manifest.
Echo[]
After returning to her home city, Maya Lopez unlocked her mutant gene, developing the ability to evocate her ancestrals and channel their powers in the present.
Rise of X[]
In 2025, Varra under her human alias Priscilla Davis published the book Decoding the "Superhuman" Gene. This book officially gave the name X-Gene and revealed the existence of the mutants to the public.
After the mutants' existence being revealed to humanity, Charles Xavier reunited a team of mutants superheroes called the X-Men and becoming know as the Professor X, to prove to the world that there isn't any reason to fear and see the mutants as a threat, and Xavier defended the idea of a peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants.
Brotherhood of Mutants[]
In response to the X-Men, a mutant called Erik Lehnsherr disagreed with Professor X and believed in the idea of mutant supremacy, so he called himself Magneto and reunited mutants who agreed with him, forming the Brotherhood of Mutants. The Scarlet Witch initially was part of the Brotherhood as she identified herself as a mutant and Magneto's daughter, but eventually she disagreed with Magneto's methods and ideas and discovered she was actually a witch, however she left the Brotherhood and allied with the X-Men.
Alternate Realities[]
Professor X[]
On Earth-838, Doctor Strange formed a secret organization called the Illuminati, which included among its members, Professor Charles Xavier, a powerful telepathic mutant to represent the mutant race. Along with the Illuminati, Xavier would fight and defeat Thanos. After their victory, Xavier watched Strange's execution at the hands of Black Bolt since Strange's corruption by the Darkhold had become another threat the Illuminati had to deal with.
Xavier became the leader of the Illuminati and was summoned when the Doctor Strange from the prime timeline traveled to their Earth. During Strange's meeting with the Illuminati, Xavier read Strange's mind and noticed his noble intentions, and that he was not like their own Strange. Xavier then tried to fight and save Scarlet Witch, since she was corrupted by the Darkhold. However, his attempts were proven to be in vain, since Scarlet Witch killed Xavier.
X-Men United[]
In an alternate universe, the X-Men appeared to be the only superhero team active, where one of its members, Beast, studied Monica Rambeau when she entered their universe and was find by the Binary. He then informed Professor X of his findings.
Characteristic Traits[]
Mutants are beings that often appear humanoid and, due to their unique genetic mutation, have powers that manifest in various ways. The powers manifested in random way, and it can vary from just having superhuman abilities to have an entire physical transformation. The mutant gene is normally completely dormant and is activated in situations of stress/trauma, being exposed to powerful artifacts such as Infinity Stones and sometimes spontaneously due to puberty. Although the mutation seems to be random, actually it was codified by the Celestials to, when activated, the X-Gene responds to the needs, fears, and/or desires of the Mutants as individuals and as species.
Mutants also arise in descendants of hybrids between different species, where genetic dilution can result in the emergence of the mutant gene, in addition, according to Beast, the mutant gene is dominant by temporal activation, that is, if an individual has a mutant gene activated, any other existing superhuman genes will be suppressed by the mutant gene, but if the mutant gene coexists with another gene with the same mechanism, the mutant gene will undergo the same suppression process, an example of this is Wanda Maximoff who is a Witch, another species also with the same mechanism, and as Wanda had her witch genes activated first, her mutant genes were suppressed.
Secondary Mutation[]
The Secondary Mutation (or "Second Mutation") is a phenomenon in which an existing mutant undergoes another mutation, gaining additional powers, such as healing, or a change in appearance. Secondary mutation is noted as the appearance of new powers, or an increase in existing powers.
The phenomenon was quickly a subject of public knowledge, as during the first days of Kitty Pryde as an X-Man, Professor Xavier attended a conference on this topic at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
It was stated by Beast that the secondary mutations usually occurred in the twenties of the subjects, and generally appeared in time of great stress.
It has been shown that secondary mutation could be triggered by more or less natural means, like Beast's mutations coming from his initial experimentation on himself, or even created, as for Emma Frost's diamond body somehow "created" by Cassandra Nova.
Mutant Power Level Classification[]
The mutants are divided into various levels based on their powers, the levels are named after Greek letters. Each level refers to the extent of powers, range and limitations.
Omicron-level Mutants[]
Omicron-level Mutants are mutants whose mutation grants them powers that do not have any type of limitation or weakness, the extent and reach of which reach multiversal levels. It is the rarest type of mutant that exists, and on the very rare occasions that it appears, it is the result of two extremely powerful mutated humans.
The only known Omicron-level Mutant is Franklin Richards.
Omega-level Mutants[]
Omega-level Mutants are mutants whose mutation grants them powers that have very few limitations and weaknesses, generally being limitations subconsciously imposed by the mutants themselves. It is one of the rarest types of mutant, they usually appear in times where crises and other types of threat to the mutant species are about to happen in the near future.
Examples of this type of Mutant are: Jean Grey, Cassandra Nova, Magneto and Storm.
Alpha-level Mutants[]
Alpha-level Mutants are mutants whose mutation grants them great powers, but their limitations generally involve range and extension, generally limiting them to the same country or the same continent in the best of cases. They are able to fully control their powers, activating and deactivating them as they please. It is estimated that less of 10% of the mutant population is classified as Alpha-level.
Examples of this type of Mutant are: Professor X, Cyclops and Emma Frost.
Beta-level Mutants[]
Beta-level Mutants are mutants whose mutation grants them powers at the same level as the Alpha-level Mutants, but what distinguishes them is that they have small limitations, such as a small detail in their appearance that prevents them from completely camouflaging themselves among humans to not being able to turn off one aspect of their powers when they want. It is estimated that 10% of the mutant population is classified as Beta-level.
Exemples of this type of Mutant are: Beast, Angel, Gambit and Sabertooth.
Gamma-level Mutants[]
Gamma-level Mutants are Mutants whose mutation also grants powers at the same level as Alpha-level Mutants and have limitations just like Beta-level Mutants. They distinguish themselves however because their limitations are much more pronounced, ranging from not being able to control their powers to changes in appearance so great that they prevent them from camouflaging themselves as humans.
Examples of this type of Mutant are: Nightcrawler and Blob.
Delta-level Mutants[]
Delta-level Mutants are Mutants whose mutation grants them subtle powers but very useful. It is estimated that 50% of the mutant population falls into this category, making it the most common type of mutant.
Examples of this type of Mutant are: Forge, Domino and Callisto.
Epsilon-level Mutants[]
Epsilon-level Mutants are mutants whose mutation grants them powers on the same level as Delta-level Mutants, but similar to Gamma-level Mutants, they have major changes in appearance that prevent them from camouflaging themselves as humans,. Some of them don't even get powers. About 20% of the mutant population is classified as Epsilon level.
There is no relevant example of an Epsilon-level Mutant to cite.
Zeta-level Mutants[]
Zeta-level Mutants are mutants that have the mutant gene but never manifest it. Roughly 10% of the mutant population is classified as Zeta-level.
One examples of Zeta-level Mutants would be Scarlet Witch, which had her mutant genes partially or completely suppressed by her witch genes.
