Natalia Alianovna Romanova, also known as Natasha Romanoff, was the Black Widow, the world's greatest spy, a former member of the Red Room, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers.

Biography[]

Natalia Alianovna Romanova was born on December 3, 1928 in Stalingrad, Soviet Union. Due to a fire which burned her house down, she lost her parents and was taken to an orphanage.

As the possible emergence of a new World War inspired fear across different countries, many world governments created black ops branches within their military. One of these governments was the Soviet, which created the Red Room, an organization responsible for recruiting and training the “least suspicious spies and assassins” - young girls. At the age of 6, Natalia was one of the earliest recruits, and she was part of a group of girls who were experimented on with the Soviet supersoldier serum as a way to enhance their physical capabilities. These girls were given the official name of “Black Widows” after the spider species.

In 1939, shortly before the beginning of World War II, Romanova was given an undercover assignment. Alongside Yelena Belova, Natalia acted as the daughter of Aleksey Lebedev and Melina Vostokoff and relocated to Germany, where Lebedev and Vostokoff were tasked with retrieving cognitive data from an A.I.M. facility, in order to stop the Nazi forces from obtaining mind controlling powers. They infiltrated HYDRA and, for three years, the four of them lived as a German family in Berlin and while aware that the family aspect was a simple ruse, Romanova loved them all like they were her actual family while Lebedev and Vostokoff loved the two as their daughters.

In 1942, Lebedev successfully stole the data and burned down the A.I.M. facility. As the "family" fled Germany, Romanova was forced to fly the plane herself and successfully landed in a secret base in occupied Poland, where they were aided by Red Room operatives. With the mission ended, the fake family split up, and the girls were sent back to the Red Room.

Back in the USSR, Natalia was given honorary titles by Joseph Stalin, and became the best agent in the Red Room. As such, she was sent to inumerous missions in the battlefront. During one of these missions, she was captured by Nazi forces and rescued by Logan Howlett/Wolverine.

After the end of the War, Natalia was sent to missions across East Europe, Latin America and Asia.

At the age of 18, in 1946, she was given an involuntary hysterectomy and had her ovaries and uterus removed, with the Red Room citing the need for sterilization as they believed pregnancy was the one thing that would prevent a Widow from completing their mission.

Around this year, the Supersoldier serum on her organism began to slow her aging process, and she would still look 18 for years to come.

In 1953, after the death of Joseph Stalin and the rise of Nikita Khrushchev into power orchestrated by HYDRA, the cognitive data stolen by Natalia and her undercover family years prior was used to create a mind-controlling pheromone exhaled by the leaders of Red Room in order to keep the Widows in control. Natalia discovered HYDRA’s involvement in the death of Stalin, but was ordered by a pheromone-enhanced Red Room operative to forget it. Controlled for years to come, Natalia became a killing machine with little to no awareness of herself.

In 1954, Natalia was sent alongside the Winter Soldier to a mission to kill a group of Japanese soldiers who discovered the existence of HYDRA within many organizations across the world, including the Red Room. During this mission, the Winter Soldier had his mask ripped from his face by a Japanese soldier before he was killed by him, and Natalia realized the Winter Soldier was none other than Bucky Barnes, an American World War II hero who was believed dead for years. Seeing him made her get free from the mind control, and she was able to free him as well. They escaped together and lived in the countryside of Japan for a few weeks. They fell in love with each other and started a relationship, but shortly after they were found by the Red Room and captured, being taken back to the Soviet Union where they had their memories erased and Barnes was sent back to cryogenic sleep.

Throughout the years, Romanova remained as a mind controlled agent. She was able to break free from time to time, but was always recaptured and controlled again. In some instances across the decades, she reunited with Yelena Belova in rare cases in which she was allowed some rest and a private life.

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Natalia continued to act as a spy and assassin for Russia.

In 2008, Romanova appeared on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar after years of searching for her, prompting Nick Fury to send Clint Barton to eliminate her. Barton went against this order after the battle with her made Natalia break free from the mind control once more. Recognizing Romanova's skills and seeing the good in her, he recommended her for recruitment into S.H.I.E.L.D.. In order to defect to S.H.I.E.L.D., she was tasked with assassinating Ivan Dreykov, the current leader of the Red Room, in Budapest. During the mission, Romanova and Barton rigged the building with bombs, and Romanova used Dreykov's daughter, Antonia, to ensure his location.

Natalia, knowing that Antonia was in the building, gave the order to detonate, seemingly killing Dreykov and his daughter. This mission would haunt Romanova, although she convinced herself that killing Antonia was necessary to complete the mission and clear herself from the Red Room. After engaging in a firefight with the Hungarian Special Forces, the two agents hid themselves for ten days, two of which were spent inside the ceiling of a subway station, before being able to leave the city. Officially defecting from Russia, Natalia moved to the United States and joined the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D., eventually changing her name to Natasha Romanoff.

Trivia[]

  • Natasha was a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Level Ten.
  • She was an atheist.
  • Even after everything she suffered at the Red Room, Natasha was still a convict Marxist-Leninist, viewing the existence of the Red Room as a “sympton of the Imperalist warfare" and believing that "the flaws of the Soviet Union were the flaws of a government, not of Socialism itself". She also seemed to hold the USSR in some sort of good light, saying she missed the movies and art of "back in the day" in a conversation with Bucky Barnes.
