Nikolai Alexandrovich Zakharov was a corrupt Russian Army general who participated in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s and was responsible for numerous massacres. The higher ups recognized him as a necessary evil in winning the war in Afghanistan, and so his crimes were covered up.

Despite his many atrocities and war crimes and visible lack of empathy and remorse, General Nikolai Alexandrovich Zakharov retained a devotion to his country, albeit an idealized version of it. He was enraged by the U.S.A.'s incursion into Russia at the Suhdek ICBM silo, seeing it as an insult to the country he served. A ruthless and indomitable man, he professed to have some sense of honour as he expressed hatred for William Rawlins and Wilson Fisk, who both describe him as a "parasite". He also had absolutely no fear of death, showing no reaction as Frank Castle smashed his skull with a hammer.
Throughout his life, Nikolai was responsible for numerous massacres, burning down villages, murdering hundreds of Afghan civilians, and even killing his own soldiers (men and women alike), who refuse to follow his orders and view them to be sinister. His crimes were always covered up, in which his actions mostly became horror stories that terrified both the Mujahideen and the Russian military. His most notable atrocity was when he and his loyalists rounded up dozens of women, children, and elderly villagers and herded them off a hill. When a young mother pleaded with General Zakharov and handed him her baby, he personally threw it off a cliff. William Rawlins views Nikolai as a threat to Wilson Fisk's criminal empire.
