The Time Variance Authority (TVA) is a bureaucratic organization created by Immortus located outside of space and time tasked with preserving Earth-515's Sacred Timeline and preventing the creation of branching timelines.
History and objectives[]
Early years[]
The TVA was founded by Nathaniel Richards, a man who lived on Earth-515's 31st Century. As a time traveler, he discovered it was his destiny to become the timelord known as Kang the Conqueror. Refusing to fullfil his destiny, he started a war against Kang and many others of his timeline variants. This event was known as the Sacred Timeline War, and it nearly led to an Incursion Event because each branching timeline evolved into separate Universes which started destroying each other.
Nathaniel finally put an end to the War, founded the Time Variance Authority to prevent branching timelines to be created on Earth-515 - in order for them not to evolve into whole Universes as it happened before - and became Immortus.
After taking many "irrelevant people" from their respective times and brainwashing them to become TVA Agents, He created a propaganda which said that:
"In the "end of times", a cataclysmic war lasted for eons and nearly destroyed existence. To prevent this, the Time-Keepers brought peace and order to the Universe by arranging the timelines into a single "Sacred Timeline." In order to preserve the timeline's proper flow, the Time-Keepers then created the Time Variance Authority to police Earth-515 from variants who create Nexus events. If these events were left unchecked, the timeline could branch off and lead to another War".
Truth uncovered[]
Eventually, a variant of Loki Laufeyson became a TVA Agent and discovered the truth about its creation alongside another variant, the rogue Sylvie Laufeydottir.
A new mission[]
When Loki became the God of Stories and begun protecting the branching timelines from disturbing Earth-515, but allowing them to exist in order for them to either naturally rejoin Earth-515's main timeline or become whole new Universes - as it was before the foundation of the TVA -, the organization's main purpose became to hunt down Kang's variants across the timeline.

Pruning[]
"To prune" a timeline is to locate the Nexus Event that diverted a branching timeline from the Sacred Timeline and destroy it, returning the timeline to normal.
Chronosapiens[]
The Chronosapiens are an entire species of biomechanical beings who can time travel naturally, and have their own laws regarding time travel. They usually do not interfere in each other's business, as the Chronosapiens are often restricted into correcting rips that naturally occur in the fabric of time, instead of pruning branching timelines like the TVA. However, there were cases in which Chronosapiens and TVA agents joined forces, usually when these "natural rips" began branching the Sacred Timeline.
Since TVA's reconfiguration, the Chronosapiens decided to help them into finding Kang's variants, while still respecting their traditional laws.
Professor Paradox[]
Percival Dachs is a time traveler and an ally to the TVA. Known as Professor Paradox, he has the ability to sense changes in the timeline. Additionally, he can sense that when a timeline is pruned, the inhabitants of that timeline feel pain as they are erased from existence. Because of this, Paradox seeks to realign the timeline so that no branching timeline needs to be pruned. He does this by locating a timeline Nexus Event and shaping the events that led to it so that timelines deviated from the Sacred Timeline return to being one with it naturally.
However, it was not often that Paradox succeeded in his goals, and that was when TVA came into action before its reconfiguration when Loki became the God of Stories. Now, with the TVA focused in hunting Kang's variants across the timeline, Paradox's mission is to guarantee that no harmful changes occur and mitigate the effects of these harmful branches.
