"Agatha Harkness, are you a witch?"

Witches, also known as Sorcerers, Magicians and Mages, is a enhanced species that possess specific genes that grants them the natural ability to harness magic. The term witches refer to Homo magi, a race that evolved from Homo sapiens. However, other species can also develop these genes and those individuals would also be classified as witches.

Although the term "Warlock" is commonly used to differentiate male witches from female witches, it appears that "Witch" is a gender-neutral term that does apply to both men and women, and most male witches prefer that, specially due to the fact that "warlock" means "oath breaker".

History[]

Creation[]

The Witches' race was created due to the Demiurge infusing a little fraction of his magic essence and potential in all life-forms, and it eventually was passed down to the early humans, and after some generations of maturing it with Hekate's intervention, it caught the attention of the Elder Gods. This led to the origin of the Primordial Witches, also called Mystical Infinity Stones, the first known members of the Witches' race, the first users of Magic, when the Elder Gods blessed them with the ability to use certain types of magic.

The First Sorcerer Supreme[]

Thousands of years ago, around the same the Primordial Witches lived, the being known as Agamotto was the first to discover the Mystic Arts on Earth. Agamotto discovered a way to absorb energy from other dimensions and supernatural beings and channel it into the Earthly Plane through spells. Thus, Agamotto created Sorcery and allowed anyone to learn to manipulate it, and then founded the Masters of the Mystic Arts, as the leader of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, he was called the Sorcerer Supreme. Agamotto even found one of the Infinity Stones, building a relic that enabled him to properly harness the Time Stone's great power. He also erected three sanctuaries at three places of power around the globe in an effort to shield Earth from extradimensional threats like Dormammu, the lord of the Dark Dimension.

Cagliostro[]

Cagliostro came in contact with the Mystic Arts. He was able to study the Eye of Agamotto, learning the spells and gestures necessary to properly use it, as well as the power the relic could exact on the time continuum. He also learned the secrets and dangers of the Dark Dimension and its ruler, Dormammu.

Cagliostro eventually recorded his knowledge in a grimoire that eventually came into the possession of the Masters of the Mystic Arts and held in the library of Kamar-Taj as part of the Ancient One's private collection.

Agatha Harkness' Trial[]

Being a witch and a member of the Salemites, Agatha Harkness stole forbidden knowledge and secretly practiced dark magic, until she was caught by her coven. During the height of the Salem witch trials in 1693, Harkness was captured and dragged through the woods for a trial and bound to a wooden post. After Harkness reaffirmed that she was a witch, her mother, Evanora Harkness, stated that she had betrayed her coven, stolen knowledge above her place, and practiced the darkest of magic, which Harkness denied.

The witches tried to kill Harkness with energy beams as Harkness pleaded with Evanora. Harkness continued to cry until her powers took over and she reversed the effect of the beams onto the witches, killing them. Harkness broke free of the post and killed Evanora before taking the brooch off her mother's corpse and flying away.

Maximoff Twins[]

Pietro and Wanda Maximoff participated HYDRA's experiments with the Mind Stone, unbeknownst to them, their biological father was a mutant, so they unlocked their mutant gene, with Pietro developing superhuman speed and Wanda developing the ability to harness the Chaos Magic. However, unbeknowest to them, Wanda actually activated her mother's witch gene instead, and her mutant gene was totally supressed by that.

Scarlet Witch[]

Maximoff, overcome by severe anguish, fell to her knees and had a breakdown, causing her to unknowingly unleash her Chaos Magic for the first time, form a new reality around her, and transform the entire town of Westview, depicting it as a 1950s sitcom with the civilians she observed earlier as recurring characters. Maximoff was also able to conjure a house to live in and finished by creating a new Vision. Upon casting her spell, she engulfed herself in her new reality, where she and Vision reunited and started living the life they'd always dreamed of.

Alternate Realities[]

838 Reality[]

On Earth-838, Wanda Maximoff was expoused to the Mind Stone, unlocking the psionic parts of her magic. However, due to not suffering the same losts of her Prime Reality's counterpart, she never unlocked her reality warping abilities.

Characteristic Traits[]

Witches are a species that are anatomically identical to humans, but are distinguishd due to having extra genes that gave them the natural ability to harness magic, essentially they don't need to study magic in order to use it, however, they may still need to study in order to better control their abilities.

Due to there being several forms of magic, witches are divided into lineages, which go back to the Primordial Witches, they passed their magic to their descendants, the children of witch parents are called Witchbreed. Despite witches usually being witches from birth, regular humans can became witches by persistent and long-term usage of magic, with it ending up making them developing the same genes that the witches have that allows them to naturally harness magic.

Every witch is distinguished by their colors, which are an allusion to the various subdivisions of Magic, for example: Witches who use Earth Magic are Green Warlocks/Witches and witches who use Chaos Magic are Scarlet Warlocks/Witches. However, only direct descendants of the first users of these subdivisions of Magic can access their full power, while others of the same lineage may have a lower level, making these direct descendants leaders among their own, for example: Rio Vidal is the first Green Witch, so, despite the existence of other green warlocks/witches, only Vidal can access the full potential of Earth Magic.

Each witch has an unconscious and primal instinct related to their lineage, and each time they use the magic of their lineage they are enhanced and strengthened, for example: Witches of the Violet Witch lineage have an innate desire for power and an inclination towards selfishness, while witches of the Green Witch lineage have an innate desire for order and organization and an inclination towards perfectionism.

The witch gene is dominant by temporal activation, that is, if an individual has a witch gene activated, any other existing superhuman genes will be suppressed by the witch gene, but if the witch gene coexists with another gene with the same mechanism, the witch gene will undergo the same suppression process, an example of this is Polaris who is a Mutant, another species also with the same mechanism, and as Polaris had her mutant genes activated first, her witch genes were suppressed.

Sometimes, for reasons that aren't totally clear, the witch gene can become recessive, so even a offspring of two witch parents would not be able to manifest the gene, and several following generations would also have the gene in recessive form, known as Dormant Witches. However, as it happens with other recessive genes, the offspring of two Dormant Witch parents, or the offspring of a Dormant Witch and a regular Witch, will make the gene would manifest itself again.
