Yulia Orlova, formerly known as the Red Widow, was a former Black Widow assassin who worked for Leviathan. As part of a class of Widows that weren't brainwashed, she was able to escape from the Red Room Academy in Moscow before the graduation ceremony and would go into hiding where she met a young man named Anatoly Pavlov. Rather than marrying, she would give birth to a daughter named Ava, but had recently left her under the care of Alexei Romanov while avoiding Leviathan, who were tracking her down for desertion.

When she learned that her daughter was taken by Leviathan, Yulia and Anatoly Pavlov joined the agency S.H.I.E.L.D., but the two had secretly spent years in trying to search for their daughter and would not give up in trying to find her. During the search, the two came in contact with Doctor Anton Rodchenko, and together, they secretly created the Red Dust, a gas used to free mind controlled victims from their subjugation. A year before the HYDRA HYDRA Uprising, Yulia and Anatoly were assassinated by the Red Widow, who turned out to be their daughter.

In 2011, Yulia was in contact with a former Widow assassin known as Toma Lee, who carried a lead on the location of . Toma warned Yulia to be dread with caution and that Leviathan has a lot of spies everywhere around the world.

A year after her death, Ava would soon discover the truth and the idenity of her parents when she was ordered to assassinate Oksana Davis. After being told by Oksana of who that woman was in the picture, Ava was deeply shocked that the woman she killed was really her father. Having learned the truth that Yulia and Anatoly were protecting her from Leviathan and had been spending all their years in trying to find her since her abduction, Ava now understood as to why her parents left her under the care and protection of Alexei. She was even angry that the people she trained with were those that her parents were protecting her from.

Upon confronting her former mentor Sasha Koshkin, the person responsible for killing Alexei, the only man who had tried protecting her, Ava swore to make her pay for abducting her. Even during the fight, Sasha taunted Ava, reminding her that she was the one that killed her own mother and father as a way for Viktor Egorav to keep the truth hidden. She also told Ava that Viktor should've brainwashed her as a way for her to be truly obedient. In a fit of rage, Ava came close to killing Sasha, but in the end, she chose to spare her life since she was done with this and left her to be arrested by the C.I.A.. Ava swore to never forget what her mother and father had done to protect her.
